I think I was upgrading from Filefield alpha 7 to Filefield rc1 when I encountered an error at update selection step related to Imagefield. Had to go into database and set status of imagefield to 0 on the system table in order to complete update. Just FYI.

I also encountered an error while updating to rc1.
"An error occurred. http://XXXX/update.php?id=24&op=do (no information available)."
I'm no Drupal expert though so I don't know what to do about it.

Fixed by uninstalling and reinstalling filefield and imagefield.
