I think this is most easily expressed with screenshots (see surrounding comments also).

Look at this. I'm on Admin > Structure > File Types > Image > Manage File Display > Link.

I start with this:

I change it to this:

I click Save:

I'm told it worked...

But it didn't:

Bildschirmfoto 2013-01-12 um 13.45.02.png

I'm filing this as major because I suspect it's related to #1886722: URL of file formatter doesn't work in any view mode. Maybe it's not that the formatter isn't working, but rather that Media doesn't even know that I've configured it that way and can't get the info on how to render it or something like that.

actually i think it is beta blocker, not an alpha blocker, just in case we dont have an alpha release and jump straiglhtly to beta tagging

I am not able to duplicate this behavior with the current version of the dev release. I suspect that it may have been fixed in another issue, but feel free to open this again if I am incorrect.
