Change the state of a referenced node

Hi, I'm in need for exactly the use case of your field actions module outlined as plan 1. I need to change states of referenced nodes and was wondering if someone has some code that I could start from, since I'm only a mediocre php/drupal developer. Any hints or code snippets are very much appreciated.
