I have a site that is configured to use the Built-in File Browser. The site started life using Public download and switched to using Private. Since the switch to Private, the File Browser no longer works. When you launch, say, Insert/Edit Image and click on the Browse Server button in the Image Properties dialogue box, the initial Resources Browser window displays okay but then I get a page reporting:

"The server didn't send back a proper XML response. Please contact your system administrator."

It's complaining about getting a 404 for URL:

/sites/all/modules/fckeditor/fckeditor/editor/filemanager/connectors/php/connector.php&ServerPath=/../drupal-files&Command=GetFoldersAndFiles&Type=Image&CurrentFolder=%2F&uuid=1265190607694

Actually, the diagnostic information displayed depends upon the browser in use. I've also seen this URL:

http://www.example.com/sites/all/modules/fckeditor/fckeditor/editor/filemanager/browser/default/browser.html?Type=Image&Connector=/sites/all/modules/fckeditor/fckeditor/editor/filemanager/connectors/php/connector.php&ServerPath=/../drupal-files

The site's Private directory is configured to be ../drupal-files thus it seems to be trying to execute connector.php with an apparently correct pathname.

If I ignore this error, I can Choose a file and initiate the upload, but the upload never completes and just displays "Upload in progress, please wait..."

This problem was present with 6.x-1.3 and is still present in 6.x-2.0. Initially, I thought it might be related to #488090: Custom upload path not working when using private folders and tokens so upgraded, but nothing changed. Presumably it's a configuration issue. Can someone please offer some guidance on how to go about debugging this?

Thanks.

This appears to have been due to a permissions problem somewhere on the path to one or both of browser.html and connector.php. I just aligned all file permissions with a known good site and it sprang back into life.
