Hi I need to add the editor to a CCK field I added to an existing content type. Please help understand how to accomplish this

Just create a text area. FCKeditor should load automatically on it.

Jorrit is correct.

If not working you might have to change a setting on your CCK field. Here are the steps. Find attached screenshot to clarify location.

STEPS
-Navigate to admin/content/node-type/YOUR-CONTENT-TYPE-NAME-HERE/fields/field_YOUR-FIELD-NAME-HERE
-Scroll down to section 'Global settings'.
-Under title 'Text processing:'. Select 'Filtered text (user selects input format)'.
-Click on 'Save field settings'.
-On the next screen click on 'Save'.
-FCKeditor or will automatically load when you edit this field.
