Are there any plans for building in some sort of CSS functionality that would tell the browser to render the source code view in a more human-readable way? It would be nice to have the option of at least inserting end-of-line characters in code so that complex HTML on the pages could be edited more easily.

I think that at least 6.x-2.x already has this. Please reopen if this is not the case.

I discovered later that this is a profile setting -- I think it was Apply source formatting: true that did the trick.
