I had
$base_url in settings.php to "http://www.example.org"

In my .htaccess I had accidentally uncommented the wrong Rewrite rule so all requests WITH 'www' was directed to example.org (without WWW). See http://drupal.org/node/1046682
I discovered this since installing a new, or updating an old, module didn't work. I was presented with an Ajax error.

Maybe not a big deal but might help someone.
