My images do not have EXIF info. Is there any other way to add captions?
(i'd really hate to have to remove the module now that I got it working! ;p )

nope. Not now at least. I'm playing with the though of mergin integrating exif module in the fast gallery module and therefore making nodes of the gallery by still keeping it simple... but it's not a priority yet.
