I would like to not require my users to ask a "two part" question (i.e., the one line, required "Question" field, plus the multiline textarea "Question details" field).

Is there any way to hide the "Question" field, so that my users only need to fill out the details field?

OR, maybe better, to hide the details field, and to make the "Question" field a larger text area?

The functionality I am trying to emulate is here: http://deansluyter.com/questions/archives.cfm

...where the question is a simple text area, with no "title" per se...

Note that the user is not required to fill in both fields of the form. The detailing field is optional.
Isuppose it would be an easy step to add a config button to disable the detialing field in the form.
Would this make you help out testing the module?

Well, the main issue I am having is that I would like people to be able to post a single, long question. The first, required field, is a simple text field -- too short for the average question.

PERHAPS it would work better (for me, anyway!) if there were some way to label these fields -- say, "Subject" and "Question" -- and to make the details field required as well.

OR (or also), to be able to define a default value for the "Question" (or "Subject") field -- i.e., "Question of the Month" -- and perhaps NOT ALLOW the user to edit it. This way, they'd only be able to edit the details box.

After all, it is possible to only display the details: http://www.deansluyter.com/index.php?q=faq

What do you think?

The field in the block surely looks short, but for the most cases it will fit any of the questions currently on your site. You could decide not to use the block form, but rather direct your users to the ask a question page that will appear to allow for longer questions.
The drawback of this is when you are using pathauto and automaticly generating url to the question. Having the complete question in the title of the node (as this would mean) would (and will) create very long url's.
In this respect I'm leaning towards the first way of doing it: Labeling the fields Subject and Question and making the details field required as well.
This would be a fairly straight forward thing to do as a modification to the code.
The latest patch in #198828: Notify Asker on answer already contains quite a lot of changes, and I'd really would like that patch to be tested, debugged and committed before implementing more features into it.
As soon as that patch is committed I'd be more than happy to make a change to the module where perhaps the field headings are configurable and the detailing field is optionally(!) set as required.
That would meet your request would it not?
