I installed External Links in an attempt to force PDFs and DOCs to open into a new window, per a suggestion in another thread.
They suggested adding the following in the Pattern Matching field:
.*doc|.*pdf
Unfortunately, I forgot the "." at the beginning, and instead entered:
*doc|.*pdf
Since doing this, none of the administrative menu expansion options work on any modules, *including* external links!
In other words, I can no longer even open up "Pattern Matching" in order to fix the problem!
The only solution I've found so far is to disable/remove the External Links module completely, which is a shame since it's otherwise very handy.
Any suggestions?

quicksketchJust turn off JavaScript and fix your settings at admin/settings/extlink.

Brainwrap commentedD'OH!!
OK, I'm feeling pretty stupid right now.
Thanks so much! Fixed.
Out of curiosity, why would that cause the issue? I presume that the wildcard in front of "doc" as a filename instead of an extension caused interference with some javascript file that starts with "doc"?
On a related note, you might want to add what I did as an extra listed feature of your module--if you enter ".*doc|.*pdf" in the Pattern Matching field, it will cause all .DOC and .PDF file links to open in a new window/tab without having to set the target as well, which is extremely handy!

frankie commentedHi,
.*doc|.*pdfwill match with all the urls that contains doc or pdf (e.g. www.example.com/my_ocuments)For me the correct pattern is
.*doc$|.*pdf$this regexp will match only with files extension xyz.doc or xyz.pdf
