Currently only mailto: and http: URLs are supported, but there are many other types out there (ftp, https, etc).

Would be nice if more URL types are supported out of the box, but also if you could somehow allow for custom URL types.

For example, on Ubuntu systems a URL with the "apt" protocol will trigger the installation of an application. People blogging about applications often add these URLs to their posts, it would be nice if these got a different icon.

This is a reasonable suggestion, but I don't have any intention of adding such functionality. I'm open to reviewing patches that are submitted for this functionality.

Title: allow for different types of links » Icons for different types of links (ftp, https, apt, etc.)

I came here today specifically to make the same feature request, because most https links I offer on my bigger sites also happen to be external. I totally realize the requirement falls well outside the scope of this module, though. Let me know if you need testing help.

Thanks for the module! Working great here.

(Editing to add for the original poster: https links *are* actually supported by this module in that they are given the same icon that http links are given).

For those wanting a PDF icon in particular, please try out the patch on #686108: PDF Icon and feed back.

The quicker it's "signed off", the quicker it can (hopefully) be adopted into the module.

Cheers,

Marc

Outside of scope.

Maybe raise this issue in External Link Extras.
