This strikes me as a really good API for improving other modules. One of the problems with using contrib modules in a production environment where you do not have access to the live db (as is often the case on bigger or secure projects) is that often contrib modules store things in the database only, and do not offer a proper API for manipulating these objects (here is an example http://drupal.org/project/finder). I wonder if exportables was a part of the drupal API, people would be more inclined to build their modules in a more consistent way?

Wrong kind of exportable - this module is just a work-around for stuff that's already in core and can't be exported. There's an issue to get CTools' export.inc into core, but I can't find it right now
