I have copied all required files to the contrib directory, renamed the minified version and the component Date Picker appears as enabled.

Yet, no pop up.

Any hint or link?

I have the same problem.
Firebug tells me

$(this).datepicker is not a function
[Break on this error] .datepicker(datePopup.settings)
date_popup.js?b (line 15)

I have installed

Betterdate 6.x-1.0 Standard FAPI 'date' fields are always required, even if not set as required. This module corrects that problem.
Date Picker Formatter 6.x-1.0-beta1 Doodle like date choice feature. Depends on: Date (enabled), Voting API (enabled), Content (enabled), Date API (enabled), Date Timezone (enabled)
jQuery UI 6.x-1.x-dev Provides the jQuery UI plug-in to other Drupal modules.
jQuery Update 6.x-2.0-alpha1 Updates Drupal to use the latest version of jQuery

I even went so far as to update the jquery file in the jquery_update module as it's still really old.

Using dates as dropdowns and text fields work, just the fancy popup does not.

Any suggestions?

I am just trying the calendar module and have date date pop-up enabled. I have even downloaded and set up jquery UI, but I still do not get a calendar popup when I click into the date field of the event entry form. I havee tried date and datetime as fields, but no joy. I've spent several hours on this so any help would be appreciated.

For anyone who's following-up on this problem, make sure you read the Readme in this folder:

event/contrib/datepicker

It explains the additional files you need to download to that directory to make that work. Make sure you have all the files that are listed in the readme. I have the date picker working on a production site so it does work.

FWIW, I just updated the Event module to 6.x-2.x-dev (2011-Jul-06) and the Date Picker popup calendar stopped working. If I revert to Event 6.x-2.x-dev (2010-Jul-11) the Date Picker works just fine. And YES, I did install the 3 date picker files in the contrib folder after the update.

Event for Drupal 8 is unrelated to older versions. If an issue similar to this one exists, please open a new issue with the 8.x branch.
