itsnu2yu commentedThis one had me stumped for a bit too.
This line: "Show in event calendar:" line in the admin/node/configure/types actually means for you to go to the the URL of your drupal site/admin/node/configure/types. Another way to get to the same place is by clicking the following links: Administer >> Content, the Configure tab, then the Content Types tab.

All I can see is
Any ideas what I click on there?!

Ric Fischer commentedFirst you need to create a content type for your event. Don't worry, this is pretty easy.
Go to administer -> content -> content types -> add content type (a tab). Give the content type a name (I used "event"), and optionally fill in the "description" and "help" fields and click the "Submit" button.
[Optional]
This will only work if the flexinode module is installed properly.
If you wish, as I did, you can add a description field so you can put more info on your event. Click on "list" (a tab) and you'll see your new "event" content type. Below it, you'll see a larger box with a bunch of different field types. Click "add text area". Label the field (I used "Description") and optionally fill out the other fields. If you want to always have the Description field in your events, be sure to put a check in the "Required field" checkbox. Click the "Submit" button.
[/Optional]
Next we'll tell Drupal to let event.module do its thing to all "event" content type. Go to your-drupal-site.com/admin/node/configure/types. When you do, your new "event" content type should be listed. Click "configure" next to it.
When configuring your individual content types, if your event.module is properly installed, you'll see a section titled "Show in event calendar". Choose an option other than "none". (All content types default to none so they aren't set up for the calendar.) Click the "Submit" button.
Now, go to "create content" and click "event". Automatically, the event.module will insert extra calendar-related fields into your content type, specifically the "Start" time, and "End" time fields.
You can create additional event types to further categorize things. Then, when you pull up a calendar, you can tell the event.module to only give you "meetings" instead of both "meetings" and "events".
I hope this helps you.

willwade commentedThanks for that - top tips!
Is this possible to do without flexinode? - the documentation seems to suggest you can :
willwade commented..sorry I just pressed the submit after accidentally deleting half that last post..
I meant to say that Im stumped at the first hurdle - I don't have a "add content type (a tab)"
link. all I have is "settings | content types" I don't have the option to add one.. (see attached screenshot)
:(
Thanks for all your help so far though! Im sure Im nearly there!

zirafi commentedHi,
Nice explanation by Ric. I followed the steps given him, but i'm stopped where configure needs to be clicked under content types. When i click on "Configure" i got this error.
Fatal error: Only variables can be passed by reference in /var/apache2/www/modules/node.module on line 713
Does anyone know have this type of problem before. Please let me know solution.
Thanks

drewish commentedparadesi, did you just updated your PHP to 5.0.5? That looks like a problem specific to the node module. I'm pretty sure that's already been fixed but you might do a little searching.
drewish commentedIf you're still having this problem you should check out the basicevent.module in the contrib folder. You'll have to enable it in the /admin/modules screen and then update content type settings.
If you're running Drupal HEAD, you should check out this patch that fixes some of the bugs in the current CVS version: http://drupal.org/node/37795
