It would be very cool when I can choose a view mode for the widget (where I have the checkboxes) and a view mode for the left coloumn so that I can display a cleaner list of referenced entities in the left.

The 1.x branch won't be getting any more changes.
The 2.x branch doesn't rely on view modes anymore, and doesn't have a left column anymore, so this issue is irrelevant.

Irrelevant? What's about rendered entites in the table which holds the entities in the entity edit form?
