If this is not already an option, the ability to have new items be added to a queue would be a great addition. This can alleviate the additional step in content creation for manually adding items to the queue.

This exists in Drupal 7 as a complimenting contrib module.

This was already an option as a contrib module for the Drupal 7 module, and now has a development version for Drupal 8 you are welcome to try out.
