Are you sure the module is properly installed? You should not see this message once the module is installed and activated.

Maybe another module is conflicting with empty_front_page. EFP module overrides the 'node' menu item callback. If another module is also overriding this callback, one of them will not work.

The empty space I see is caused by

This is unrelated to this module. This div probably comes from your theme or some other module.
