According to the front drupal page, Drupal 5 will no longer be maintained when Drupal 7 is released.
Some users are very concerned about the viability of this module and are fleeing to others like ubercart...
I would rather not have to migrage to ubercart for some customers... but if we cannot get a stable release and the only stable release is on drupal 5, and... that is to be discontinued soon (7 release)... well that may be the tipping point to say e-commerce does not have a stable release on a supported drupal core version... therefore plan on migrating inventory to ubercart or something else...

Bimble commentedI came here to make the same point.
I waiting for a stable release that works with ec_anon and ec_nodeaccess, these are completely non-functional together at the moment. I’ve also had no word on the critical bugs raised.
If the maintainers are struggling, perhaps the ecommerce user community can combine to fund a contact developer. I know that migrating to Ubercart will cost me time and money anyway, funding might be more cost effective if we can find enough contributors.
Some word from the maintainers please, the ambiguity/waiting makes it difficult to plan a strategy and the default position is forcing a migration to Ubercart.

davea commentedHello All,
Glad to hear from you all about your concerns. I am concerned as well.
I am not the lead on this project but I am a contributor. I wish I had answers for you regarding *stable* status. At this point, I can't really speak to anything but the bug list. There are 6 bugs that appear to be critical and some of these you all mention. Getting these critical ones fixed seems priority....Currently I am wrapping up recurring donations for ec_donate and ec_authorize_net. Then I can focus on the outstanding ones you mention here.
I have a client now using D5 and is in the same situation as you and I are in. Moving to Ubercart is not an option for them or me and I agree with you that this needs to get to *stable* status before D7 goes *stable*.
I know that some sponsorship would probably get things moving faster. I will be contacting my client to see if they can help any. Moving them to D6 has to happen and that means ec4, although migration won't be easy.
And as you can probably tell, ec4 is light-years ahead of ec3. New apis, everything is themeable and everything is translatable.

gordon commentedI am wanting to get a stable release out ASAP, but unfortunately due to a huge mess of a paid project that has come up I have been very pressed for time.
In the next couple of weeks I hope to get the last couple of issues done and then get out the stable version so I can start working on the D7 version. The first D7 version will just be the current version upgraded and some minor changes to make more use of ctools to do a lot of the heavy lifting in some areas.
If anyone wants to help with the last couple of critical issues it would be most appreciated.

webengr commentedthanks all for the input. I understand overload. Sorry to have started the thread here, but perhaps you can post this assurance on http://drupalecommerce.org/
As to the first stable release, I need the "Invoice generation and email notifications",
But alas your other post in http://drupal.org/node/610666 it may not be available to "4.1" which would need to be available for me before drupal 5 is discontinued.
I don't know how many others need that feature to upgrade....:( But I do understand the need to not let this feature delay a stable for others who don't need it.... Just hope it gets into the new ecommerce also before drupal 7 is released.
BTW, could you put a paypal button donate on http://drupalecommerce.org/

gordon commentedThe invoice generation will most likely not be there as this is mainly to do with the new checkout which will be handling all this. the problem was that ctools came out after I did the majority of the work on the checkout and this is actually going to be what is going to handle the invoice generation.
Lastly the email generation is not going to be handled by e-Commerce anymore but instead by rules. There is a default rule which is disabled which is used to send emails on the completion of an order.
