Related to http://drupal.org/node/1236646?

On my localhost, everything works, but when the site is loaded on a server (CentOS 5.6, httpd 2.2.3, php 5.3.3), on the "Manage Display" tab for a content type, when I select a region from the drop-down to assign a field to display in (default: None; at this time the only other option is: Content), the "throbber" shows up and spins endlessly. I've waited a couple of minutes or more, with no response.

Checking in Firebug, it reports a 200 OK status from the initial AJAX call, but the response is empty. Also, when I view the request that was sent, it goes on seemingly forever then Firebug reports "... Firebug request size limit has been reached by Firebug. ..."

I tried upping the PHP post_max_size from 8MB to 20MB, just in case, but it didn't make any difference. Either that's not the problem, or it's trying to send > 20MB of data.

Hrm, that sounds like an annoying one to tackly as it seems more a PHP related problem. You local version is probably not php 5.3.3 ?

I'm having the exact same problem. Got around 10 fields, using latest ctools + ds from 30 mins ago. The first field I change works but I need to click save between every action. Eg. I can't change region for field_title and change the markup to H2 without saving in between.

OK, it seems to have had something to do with Memcache (http://drupal.org/project/memcache). For whatever reason, it just didn't work if the Memcache module was enabled. So... I disabled memcache, now works again.

Feel free to close unless that info is useful enough to pursue.

(In fact, maybe even related to http://drupal.org/node/1214536?)

Yeah looks like it. I mean, DS only does a form alter on field ui and that's there is :)

Old issue I know, but if turning off memcache solves it then 9 chances out of 10 the problem is numer one in this post.

Just for reference...
