The community initiative on Install Profile Packaging will bring about some significant changes to packaging that need to be understood by profile maintainers.

I wonder how we can alert maintainers to these changes.

What about a message on installation profile nodes that's only showed to CVS maintainers of a node:

Recent changes to installation profile packaging brought important changes, please read the announcement (link to announcement).

New to maintaining an installation profile? Read the quick start guide for important instructions.

Would that work? Any other ideas on how to alert maintainers to new features and best practices?

Yeah, we could do something like that via drupalorg.module. We can/should also post to the http://groups.drupal.org/distribution-profiles group about it. Drupal planet, development@d.o, etc also help.

Ok, I've just added a link to this issue to the community initiative page. http://drupal.org/node/779440

I'm not sure this is a good idea, but moving it to the right queue if it's going to happen. This is a d.o-specific hack, not something for Project itself.
