This is a follow-up issue to few Slack discussions with Hestenet and the AI Initiative and will work as a follow up of #3559846.
We have seen one more issue when using this in the AI Initiative that makes it hard to work in a similar manner to current drupal.org and that is that you can't assign yourself to an issue if you are not a maintainer. Or unassign yourself.
So we should have something similar to a slash command to be able to assign yourself or unassign yourself.
Decide the best solution and implement it.

mradcliffeIn the current core work flow, we highly encourage people to "assign" by writing a comment about what we are attending to work on rather than using the Assigned drop down list unless they are a subsystem maintainer or core committer.
I think we should still encourage this behavior in GitLab, but we do have the unique opportunity to use the reviewer/request reviewer for targeted reviews on merge requests.
