While I'll absolutely be making the build-[distro].make file, which I completely missed when originally looking through the standards, I am concerned that renaming the [project].make file will mean that the standard Drush make inheritance will no longer work, need to confirm this.

Looks like Drush will inherit the drupal-org.make file, so there's no issue not having a [project].make file.
