It is possible to break the forums by deleting the forum vocabulary. The link between forums/taxonomy is broken and there is no way to fix it (that I could find) using the admin interface. A forum search reveals that several users have encountered this problem. Please see this post in the forum for more info.

Perhaps the forum-vocab link should be re-created automatically under certain conditions?

Forum vocabulary should be marked as protected when forum.module is activated.
At least this would warn admins that they cannot delete that vocabulary!

This has been fixed in Drupal 6 (as far as I can see, it's impossible to delete the forum vocabulary by accident).
