Problem/Motivation

We've been experiencing an issue where pasting from Word will randomly wrap some of the text in an <a> tag with no attributes. The text will be regular text in Word like "Lorem ipsum dolar", but the markup for that text will end up being "<a>Lorem ipsum dolar</a>". This is happening in the middle of large blocks of text with various different headers and other links that are all being formatted correctly.

Steps to reproduce

  1. Create a new node
  2. Paste content from MS Word into the body field
  3. Publish the node

This is surely an upstream bug in CKEditor itself and nothing we can fix directly in Drupal?

That's very possible, thanks longwave.

@seismicmike are you able to provide an example plain-text version of what is being pasted (sanitized to remove sensitive info?)

Version: 8.9.x-dev » 9.2.x-dev

Drupal 8 is end-of-life as of November 17, 2021. There will not be further changes made to Drupal 8. Bugfixes are now made to the 9.3.x and higher branches only. For more information see the Drupal core minor version schedule and the Allowed changes during the Drupal core release cycle.

Version: 9.2.x-dev » 9.3.x-dev

Version: 9.3.x-dev » 9.4.x-dev

Drupal 9.3.15 was released on June 1st, 2022 and is the final full bugfix release for the Drupal 9.3.x series. Drupal 9.3.x will not receive any further development aside from security fixes. Drupal 9 bug reports should be targeted for the 9.4.x-dev branch from now on, and new development or disruptive changes should be targeted for the 9.5.x-dev branch. For more information see the Drupal core minor version schedule and the Allowed changes during the Drupal core release cycle.

Thanks for reporting this issue. We rely on issue reports like this one to resolve bugs and improve Drupal core.

As part of the Bug Smash Initiative, we are triaging issues that are marked "Postponed (maintainer needs more info)". This issue was marked "Postponed (maintainer needs more info)" almost 2 years ago.

I was unable to reproduce the issue on Drupal 9 with the following steps:

  1. Using Drupal 9.4
  2. Create a new blog page
  3. Pasted a bunch of text from a Word doc
  4. Result: Everything worked as expected (including adding a mailto on an email address)

Since I could not reproduce this issue and since there weren't other steps to reproduce the issue provided since the issue was postponed in 2020, I'm marking the issue "Closed (cannot reproduce)". If anyone can provide complete steps to reproduce the issue (starting from "Install Drupal core"), document those steps in the issue summary and set the issue status back to "Active".

Thanks!
