what about making the drupal product available in rpm format

i know, installation of the tar ball is so easy that this should not be necessary. however, there are at least two advantages
1) the process of upgrading is not triggered by a sysop who follows the community but by a iup2date alike process. when security vulnerabilities are known, this could come in very handy

2) the rpm might be included in distro's, enhancing the reach of drupal

disadvantages: someone has to make the package and make sure the latest stable version is available in rpm as well

The problem is that we'd need somebody who maintains the rpm. The Debian
package is already sort of unmaintained (still 4.0 IIRC).

I have to apologize to Hugh Espuny, the .deb maintainer: It is up to date (4.1).

We have a new Debian maintainer, but apparently nobody wants to do a .rpm. Not too much of a loss.

I have packaged 4.6.3, and I am willing to maintain the rpm. I plan to package several themes and modules as well.

Dag Wieers is maintaining a drupal6 RPM package for RHEL/CentOS based systems in his "rpmforge (rf)" repository.

Alternatively, the SRPM from the updates channel for Fedora 11+ can be rebuilt. I just did this on a CentOS 5 server:

[root@anet ~]# cd /usr/src/redhat/SRPMS
[root@anet SRPMS]# wget http://download.fedora.redhat.com/pub/fedora/linux/updates/11/SRPMS/drupal-6.15-1.fc11.src.rpm
[root@anet SRPMS]# rpm -i --nomd5 drupal-6.15-1.fc11.src.rpm
[root@anet SRPMS]# cd
[root@anet ~]# rpmbuild -bb /usr/src/redhat/SPECS/drupal.spec
[root@anet ~]# rpm -Uvh /usr/src/redhat/RPMS/noarch/drupal-6.15-1.noarch.rpm
