Blog module is not required by Blog API module but in this case posted nodes will be created without node type information, so one can not edit them.
I found this problem via Digg's "Blog It" feature with MetaWeblog API protocol.

Considering the time elapsed between now and the last comment plus the fact that D5 is no longer supported, I am closing this ticket.
