Need to define custom fields that users can fill in their user profile to include embeded object html. At present only fields are listed below. Have created a category "Profile Plug-ins" and field "XXX" for entering the HTML for the embeded object using multi-line textfield, but object doesn't show. This is the only field type that is available for achieving this. Has anyone figured out how to create an embed or HTML field?

Contrib modules can integrate with and provide additional fields for Profile. http://drupal.org/project/swftools or http://drupal.org/project/embed or http://drupal.org/project/emfield can provide such a profile field.
