Anonymous (not verified) commentedI also encountered overlay problems. While for the admin it works fine, for Authenticated Users with the permission set correctly the overlay displays the entire site including sidebars, etc. in it instead of the half-transparent black background.

geerlingguy commentedCould the OP please post more data on where exactly the problem is happening, if it's always happening, etc.
Also, have you tried clearing the caches multiple times, and have you run update.php?
minneapolisdan commentedI had just encountered this, and realized it was a permissions setting. If anyone else has this issue, remember to check 'View the administration theme' for each role that is supposed to edit the site.
LTech commentedThanks, this was very helpful. I didn't have the 'administration theme' enabled.

adityamenon commentedIn my installation, files important for jQuery and Javascript to work, located in the misc/ folder seem to have gotten deleted somehow. I have no idea how that happened, but when I used firebug, I could see a bunch of 404 errors for files like that, and also .js files from the Overlay and Context modules.
I suggest that you load your website in Firefox while keeping Firebug's console tab open. You might have missing files which can simply be copied from a vanilla drupal extracted folder.

jkwilson commentedAlso be sure to clear your browser cache if you notice the overlay has disappeared and flushing the Drupal cache doesn't get it back. I've found that Drupal might think the overlay is set to work, but my browser (Firefox in particular, which has an especially sticky cache) doesn't.

Archie22is commentedErrr... anyone got an answer why? I was working on a search module and the Apache Solr when it happened. I refreshed my other open tab and it was active from the modules list. Shout if you get to an answer before I do.

Bishupz1 commentedI wanted to include a shopping cart system in the current project I am building and found out that the "e-commerce" module was the culprit to collapsed overlays. By no means do I know where within the module this bug might be, but removing the module will reinstate the overlays.
Extra note: The module was not even enabled and it caused this failure of overlays within the site.

jaesperanza commentedOld post, but encountered this today on D7.34. Permission roles, clearing/flushing cache, and checking theme settings didn't help. Installing jquery_update did the trick. Cheers!

Donit commentedCheck also if the cause is a minified JS file. I my case, I needed to delete the cached/compresses JS files in the folder.
