Clicking a link in a pager returns a zero based page number in the url. i.e. click "2" => http://foo?page=1
How about doing a bit more work in the backend so that the page number in the url matches the link that is clicked.
click "2" => http://foo?page=2
Clean url's in the pager would be even better:
click "2" => http://foo/2/ or http://foo/page/2

elv commentedGood idea, but can it be done easily? The code involved is in pager.inc so I triaged the issue.
There's a forum topic with an attempt at solving this: http://drupal.org/node/73207

catchBig +1, I'd love to see this.
Would also remove some kludgy $pageno -1 code in various places

silverwing commentedMarking this as a duplicate of #294449: Match URL parameters to logical page numbers - which was won't fixed.
