Step 3 should, absolutely, be step 2, you shouldn't "unpack" the files to your server before reading the instructions in the upgrade file!

Anonymous (not verified) commentedYou have to unpack the files before you can read the instructions. If you dig deeper in the docs, you'll see that it says "make a backup".

rivena commentedIt says open the files onto the server, you can open up the tarball on your computer and read through.
You don't have to dig deep into the docs to find where it says backup, it says that in #1.
What I object to is, there are a lot of things you are supposed to do before you put the files in the server, like log in as user 1, put your site into maintenance mode, etc. That's good information, that should be read through before you put stuff on the server itself.

cameron tod commentedI have changed the order and wording of steps. The page now emphasizes that you should read upgrade.txt carefully before overwriting your existing Drupal installation.
