Agenda
Previous meeting agenda - should have a summary
- Remind people to comment on the agenda for credit.
- Feedback and ideas for WIP on DD&I Processes doc
- DD&I Contrib virtual sprint day discussion
- How to get D&I involved in DUG
- Thoughts on the governance blog post update
- Brainstorming ideas on reaching out to Dries about diversity & inclusion issues
- Could Drupal Con NA offer childcare, despite the possible large budgetary implications? How do we deal with how Drupal's event budgets are structured around *not* having key elements that help make conferences more inclusive. Is it possible to change that?
- Checkins / open floor
possibly a doodle to vote on?
(need more information for this from @dwells-tn)
Summary
DD&I Processes doc collaboration
-Should we separate DrupalCon Initiatives or keep them as a type of initiative? Why are they special?
DD&I-Contrib Virtual sprint day
The ddi-contrib-team would like to host a virtual sprint day!
DDI Contrib Team is a DDI initiative aimed at increasing contribution from under-represented and marginalized individuals in the Drupal community. We’re working on new models of mentorship & support around contribution.
- volunteers to help out and/or participate: @aimeerae, @alexdmccabe, @ekl1773, @amyjune, @brittany.mccullough
- Eli is assembling a comment on the issue to draft a google form.
- Who's the target here, mentors or contributors?
- Are we sticking with "Virtual Sprint" or do we want to adopt "Virtual Contribution Day"?
- What tasks need to be done before the day? How much time do we need to accomplish each task?
Integrating D&I into local Drupal groups
The local Nashville Drupal community is getting going again, and they wanted to discuss ways to integrate diversity and inclusion from the beginning in their group, and this is a good chance for us to discuss how to do the same in other local Drupal communities.
How can meet ups be more friendly to people form underrepresented groups?
- the need to recruit underrepresented groups
- visible female leadership
- It makes a difference at many levels to have diverse organizers and leaders
- On the importance of diverse leaders and event organizers: http://lotusmedia.org/if-you-build-it-they-wont-come
- There is a difference in leadership, not just gender based but other factors. Leadership should represent a broad swath of the community.
- one thing that has been mentioned consistently is that when events become centered around alcohol, that can be a big turnoff.
- if its focused on food (lunch as you mentioned), finding a place that is not loud, not centered around alcohol, serves food varieties (allergies, religious issues and other things considered)
- the hardest thing for doing the local DUGs is getting a time that works for people to come (workday vs. after work) and also getting the word out. Getting the word out on the Drupal groups site is a great start, meetups.com works, and then if you are in other tech groups, sharing it there.
- Also, having a diverse group of contributors to topics is good. A lightning talk day can really get a bunch of people involved quickly without a huge commitment to big presentations or anything.
- And frankly, lack of alcohol at the end of a long work day would turn me off. What I think we need is an awareness of D&I and support for meetups and camps.
- Another thing is that if you have an event where people are talking, being intentional about starting off the meeting by encouraging others to be welcoming, adopting a code of conduct and mentioning it in a positive way.
- To grow the team, have concrete topics to cover (not just “general chat” but “image styles tricks”) that brings in people of different kinds, not just the experts, and then as per above let people contribute on a small scale (lightning talks, showing the module they just found last week and how they set it up, etc)
- Being intentional about greeting people, helping them to get involved in conversations, being observant about people who might be standing somewhere and not involved in a discussion, checking in, etc.
- Maybe a welcoming committee that makes sure every single person in the room is welcomed & engaged at every meeting.
- My church has a thing based around that where they encourage people to say hi to three people before or after the service, particularly people you don’t know. Something like that could be a good cultural thing to encourage.
- In our meetups, we start with food and drink. It creates a nice atmosphere for people to mingle. We always have a topic or two, and people are encouraged to speak.
What are the common forms of pushback that you have seen to working more D&I into UGs?
- From a discussion at DrupalCon, the most critical issue is time. Everyone is a volunteer. It's hard for them to find time to do outreach.
- Hi - Just wanted to come out of lurker mode and reference a couple #documentation initiatives that hopefully are coming together as one https://groups.drupal.org/node/519151
https://www.drupal.org/about/strategic-initiatives/documentation
- Related here because the initiative is setting the groundwork for helping improve or create documentation guides…including https://github.com/drupaldiversity/event-organizer-packet

My agenda item: integrating D&I into your DWG from the beginning. Nashville is just getting started up again, and I'd like to talk about some ideas about how to build it into what we're doing as we grow.

sugaroverflow commentedHi @dwells-tn
Since this is the agenda for the May 17th meeting this week, we give attendance credit after people have attended the meeting - so we ask them to post that they attended during or after the meeting :)
Thanks for adding an agenda item, I'd be happy to add that to the meeting, but I'm not sure I know what DWG means? Could you please explain.
