The display at amadorable.com is fine ... but it's not what I get from this module. Instead, I get a list of alphabetical characters, with any matching categories nested below that. In addition, hierarchy is ignored; parent categories are simply not shown. Am I missing something obvious in the configuration?

Ideal would be the Yahoo directory approach:

PARENT1
p1child1, p1child2, p1child3 ...

PARENT2
p2child1, p2child2, p2child3 ...

and so forth.

I understand that the current directory module display may not suit all needs. It'll improve as time goes on. Right now, there are some bugs when running on 4.7, so until they are fixed, I'm not thinking about new features or changing the way things are displayed.

I can't tell you (yet) if you are missing something in your configuration - please review the (newly added) handbook entry and tell me if that helps. Feel free to describe your exact configuration: drupal version, directory.module version (please provide the ID string inside the directory.module file) and provide details of your directory.module configuration settings (admin>>settings>>directory).

Or, send me a link to your site so I can see what's going on.

I'm working changes that will provide diagnostic information for this module, in order to assist in debugging these problems.

Is this a support request, bug report, or a feature request? Please clarify.

Supposed to be a support request, but I must have been fumblethumbs when I selected the category.

I'm a bit puzzled how to help you with this - if it's a support request, please provide a URL where I can see the errant behavior.

Otherwise, the module behavior is "by design" - it's not capable of providing a truly yahoo- or dmoz-like display, at present - that would be a feature request.
