As per title, is it possible to use the list-style-image, e.g. [+] AND [-] for expand and callapse?
as I see the puting the main topic as child or 2x click not so user friendly.

This option is in the D7-compatible 7.x-1.x trunk (released as 7.x-1.0-alpha4) and backported to the D6-compatible 6.x-4.x branch, which unfortunately has not yet been released (while the 6.x-4.x-dev package can be downloaded, it is not recommended for production).

I expect to release an alpha of 6.x-4.x before the end of the year, but as #956962: error when upgrading to DHTML menu 6.x.4.x-dev shows, it's still a very unstable version right now.
