dnewkerk commentedI think what is happening is that TinyMCE's editor area sets its "width" dynamically when the page loads, and does not adjust after that. This is different from other text fields in Drupal, which scale their width dynamically as the browser width is adjusted. If you try the same thing with a TinyMCE editor area open and it does not scale its width, but sticks with the width originally specified when the page loaded. This is not limited to the Deco theme - I tested and found the same behavior in Garland, Zen, and other fluid-width themes. Whether that behavior is intentional, or a bug/feature-request you can report to TinyMCE, I'm not sure.
What I'm not sure about is why anything is changing with your TinyMCE editor area when you click on it - it shouldn't change at all when you click on it. Try using the Garland theme and see if you get the same behavior. I cannot reproduce this using Drupal 5.2, the latest Deco theme, and the latest version of TinyMCE (other than what I mentioned above with scaling the size of the browser window). Also if it isn't set, make sure that TinyMCE is enabled by default (so you don't have to click enable rich text).
Can you tell us what resolution your screen is running at (e.g. 1024x768, etc)? And also, if your browser was not maximized when you experienced this issue, please try again with the browser maximized to the full window and see if it still occurs (if your resolution is low, it may - otherwise I suspect it won't happen). Also please confirm which OS and browser you are using.

tinymce Version 2.1.2 (2007-08-21) (at least that's what the readme says)
rich text editor is on by default
Windows XP
1680x1050
appears fine when edit page is first opened, tinymce box content (including the toolbar) jumps to the right when clicked on, out of alignment with the editor area and therefore making the scroll bar inaccessible
1280x1024
same thing
I attached a jpg of before and after
The problem happens in Firefox 2 but not IE6 or Opera.
this is not simply the lack of rescaling of the tinymce editor area, which I also observe.
In Garland and Pleroma (also fluid), the shift on click still happens but everything stays within the area so no functionality is lost assuming the window is maximized.

dnewkerk commentedThanks for the screenshot... yeah that is definitely not normal. One thing you can try as a test... I see that you have a very large supply of buttons/features enabled in TinyMCE. Can you please try disabling some of them, or else creating a new "simple" TinyMCE profile and making it default for your Role instead (just for the test). In particular, disable any of the Style/font dropdowns - as now that I see your screenshot, I recall that on mine when I clicked into TinyMCE when I had one of the dropdown features enabled, the dropdown populated with CSS class names "after" I clicked, and changed the size of the dropdown (I no longer am using the dropdowns). When this happened for me it didn't break the editor, since I still only had a few features enabled, so it only filled more of the available space on the toolbar. I was also using Firefox 2 (on OS X) when it happened - I haven't tried in IE since Drupal is running locally on my system right now.
If the above does end up being the "source" of what's causing TinyMCE to break when you click, then I suggest finding out how to force your buttons onto more rows so that there will be extra space available at the right (particularly with the dropdowns)... I'm not sure if/how to do that in TinyMCE but I suspect it's possible.
In the "CSS" section of TinyMCE's configuration, are you using "use theme css" or "tinyMCE default"? If you're using "use theme css" can you try changing temporarily to "tinyMCE default" to see if the problem persists? It's likely that some adjustment can be made to Deco to ensure it avoids this TinyMCE bug - if so I'll leave that to the developer.

jonmower commentedI'll continue investigating. I think I was wrong before when I said that the shift happens with Pleroma. It doesn't seem to now.
Using FF2 on my personal laptop with Deco, there was a tiny shift but no major problem like there is on my work computer.
jonmower commentedPreviously I had switched from use theme css to tinymce default but that didn't change anything
I disabled some of the buttons including the style/font dropdowns...and the problem is gone.
