i have
uploaded and enabled all the associated modules as described
uploaded the template.php file after adding my theme name (my theme does not have its own template.php file)
imported the news item and views files
created 3 nodes for the slideshow
checked permissions
bug output seems to match template.php file (both attached)

The slideshow themes where placed in different directories.
By default the slideshow themes are placed in the directory custom/modules/ddblock
The slideshow template files need to be placed in the same directory as the
ddblock-cycle-block-content.tpl.php and ddblock-cycle-pager-content.tpl.php files
same construction that node.tpl.php needs to be in the same folder as node-[content-type].tpl.php otherwise the node-[content-type].tpl.php will not be called.
When other slideshow themes (e.g. gradient-blue30p) with ddblock-cycle-block-content.tpl.php and ddblock-cycle-pager-content.tpl.php are placed in a different folder it depends which folder the drupal theming system will find first.
When it find the folder with the gradient-blue30p first the upright themes will not work, because the theming system tries to find candidate template files in the folder with the gradient-blue slideshow theme.
When another slideshow theme is added the folder structure should look like this:
Hope this helps to explain why slideshow themes can not be placed in different folders.
(think about it as node.tpl.php and node-[content-type].tpl.php)
