Over in #1972864: iCal Feed Creates New Google Calendar, malcomio brought up the feature that Google Calendar offers which allows you to create a link that directly adds a new calendar based on an an iCal. This allows our users to skip the step of downloading the file to their computer, then uploading it to Google Calendar.

The link creator is on http://support.google.com/calendar/answer/3033040. I won't be especially difficult to create our own links and offer them in addition to the ical icon.

I misinterpreted what this mechanism from Google was for. It doesn't let you import external calendars, it lets you "share" your existing Google calendar with other people. It doesn't look like Date iCal can make use of it.
