The date field display options don't work if the field is in a fieldgroup, because the theme function, which uses the field context to set the display options, does not consider the group data structure.
I already posted this patch in another issue (http://drupal.org/node/411706#comment-1395144): I repost the patch because the previous issue was not relevant to the problem that I encountered and was closed.

Any thoughts on how to make date fields for all day events appear on the day of the event? Using the display options "From: Now" doesn't show the event if it's past it's start time (which is usually 12am on all day events). http://drupal.org/node/251994#comment-2089198
