So I have been having this problem for a while. Whenever I tried to create a new field in a content type I would get an unexpected error. I finally figured out from looking at my watchdog reports that the date module was causing an error whenever I created a new field and crashing the entire site. I disabled the date module for now but that's not really a solution since I use the date module for lots of things including my event calendar.

Can anyone help me resolve this?

I just wanted to follow up on this and say that the problem seems to be environmental. I set up a copy of the site on my locally and no longer have this problem at least on the local version.

Yeah, I think it's a PHP 5.4 thing.
