I just tried to install a copy of ctools on a test site and php threw an error about an unexpected character (unfortunately I didn't copy the exact text of the error) on line 163 of /includes/context.inc.

Here's the code:
if (!empty($context) && $context[strlen($context) - 1] === '0') {/

Typo?

I deleted the offending forward slash and the module installed without any further issues.
