Have you considered adding support for Open Library (http://openlibrary.org/)? In addition to text-based data, the service provides book cover images.

Creating a .inc file is, unfortunately, beyond my technical abilities. It looks like it would be fairly straightforward for someone who knows what they're doing. There are detailed developer docs available (http://openlibrary.org/dev/docs).

Thanks for that hint, wasn't aware of that service -- anybody up for hacking this together, including caching the book cover locally (e.g. via file_get_contents, file_put_contents) ... ?

Check out the Book Post module ("All data comes from the Open Library Project"). I'll be evaluating it next month.
