text field will not appear as token replacement value for rules action

I have added a required CCK text field called "group" to my site content profile type. Since I want users to pick from a list of allowed values I have configured the CCK field to use a "select list" as input widget.
Unlike all other CCK fields in my content profile this field will not appear in the list of available replacement tokens for an action to be performed upon user login

OTH if I change the input widget type of my group field to "text field" the field will happily appear in the list of available tokens

What am I doing wrong? Why can't I use a "select list" as widget type for my text field?
