jamesgrobertson commentedUpdate: if I set the block permissions to be only viewable by authenticated users, it works, but that's obviously handled correctly by core.

good_man commentedI tried to put "Main page content" inside sidebar and header regions, and they both don't show them for anon. users as set by the content type settings.

Steve -cc commentedJust wanted to mention that I was having this same issue. Blocks showing on the page / node with the access denied message.
When I set the blocks that appear on the page to authenticated user then they work the way I want them to ie: they do not show to someone who might accidentally stumble on the node.
