Looking at the current homepage, my eye is drawn to the security update that's the latest news item. I notice the highlighted red text that says "Critical"

My thought is that security updates should not be on the home page. Reasons:

* Developers rarely go to the homepage (unless logging in)
* The red and technical colors can scare people (IMO)
* The new beautiful homepage is for marketing to non-drupal people, right?

Anyway, just a thought. Feel free to close out if it doesn't make sense :)

Summary edits can handle this. The post type has a Summary field. Its default value is pulled from the beginning of the Body. But especially for content pushed to the homepage, people can and should create a useful and appropriate summary.

FYI: I just changed the summary for that post, so the red Critical is gone (as well as other parts).

Agree that we need to answer the "Does this serve the right audience well?" question. If I remember correctly, these types of posts hit the homepage to get awareness. So any alternative to homepage placement should create awareness in other ways. Could mean more social media production; could mean email; could mean careful use in right-side blocks on certain pages.
