Motivation

We want to be able to provide site builders with a choice of product types when installing Commerce Kickstart.

These product types should also be installable at a later date, and off the facility to update to the configuration released in later versions of Commerce Kickstart.

Resolution

To do this we will use Features to export configuration into maintainable packages that can be installed and updated on Commerce Kickstart sites.

Remaining tasks

  • Add Features to dev requirements
  • Export Configuration to Modules

We will not be taking the Search API based product catalog over into Kickstart. That will remain solely available through the complete installation of the demo store.

We shouldn't use the deprecated features module. Using drush/drupalconsole to make use of the advanced configuration management in Drupal 8/9 is better.

Features module is not deprecated, configuration management means it can now be used for its original purpose - sharing a configuration set between projects.

If you are building a Distribution you can still use Features to export specific configuration into your profile or modules.
