If you can do this in code, that would be super.

Then we will find a way to separately denote sponsor organizations vs. attending ones.

While it's true that the code itself could be agnostic to sponsor vs. organization, the vast majority of use cases are interested in sponsor organizations. In some cases those are even free community sponsors.

So for easier UX comprehension and because it's a dominant fix this isn't likely to make it into D7 COD.
