Some other conference sites have allowed attendees to make connections prior to the conference. Feedback has been that's it's been useful to let other people know you like their work, or want to meet them, and then there's a greater chance you'll actually connect during the conference.

The IDEA conference does this very well.

Possible interactions include
* flag someone as a friend
* flag someone you're a fan of
* flag someone you'd like to meet
* leave a public note on their profile (like Meetup.com greetings, or Facebook wall)
* send a private message

What do folks think of this? See attached mockup, which would be the Attendees page (planning for Attendees page to have exposed filters to help find folks).

Some of this functionality is available now in http://drupal.org/project/facebook_status. I'll be using it for Drupalcamp Atlanta that should launch in August. It makes sense though to wait for the D7 version for inclusion in COD as it's going to change significantly and possibly have a challenging upgrade path.

Cleaning up old issues.

A more immediate solution to this issue is use the personal contact form on an individual's profile. This allows for the individual to set their own privacy preferences (allow others to contact me, do not allow others to contact me) which eliminates some of that "I know this person, we're friends, etc" vetting some of those prompts are designed to provide. A user's profile can be accessed via a referenced entity (ie, contact a speaker directly) or via the Attendees page.
