It would seem beneficial to identifying issues such as this with new users and roles if we have a masquerade module installed.

If there is a better module for this job, I'm open to it, naturally.

I think the Development module's Switch User submodule is a better option. I enable the switch block in the Dashboard of most sites I maintain.

Devel is also useful for troubleshooting permission and performance problems, but that's probably going to be a moderate or even difficult topic.
