It would be helpful if the README.txt included instructions on how to properly install an installation profile. (The Install Profile API doesn't seem to include such documentation, and it seems one has to wade through the Distributions group to find answers.)

Hrm, ok. It should really point to a handbook page that describes this. I'll see if I can either find the appropriate handbook page or write one.

Added a link to http://drupal.org/node/306267 in the README.txt in both HEAD and DRUPAL-5. I also just edited that handbook page to give it a bit of help.
