Hi there!

I've got a couple of ideas to (maybe) make captcha completly block spam...

1. Idea: simple mix of text and image captcha
- show random letters with different (clearly distinguished basic colors) and ask a question to write only letters in specific color (color request changes randomly every time)

2. Idea (maybe an extra feature)
- implement something really new.
a) Resign of alfanumerical signs from the keybord
b) build own dictionary of signs (thousands of similar shapes like: ©, ®, ¢, §, &,..)
c) best if signs where made of separate dots or lines in different configuration (easy for human and not for computers) :D ... maybe chinese alphabet?
d) pull a group of signs from dictionary (like similar 10 signs) and display above image captcha
e) pull a subgroup of example 3 signs from the group abave and print as image captcha
f) tell a user to copy right signs from the display 10 signs above the image OR create accordingly 10 on/off switches and tell user to mark right ones (faster! not need copy)

3. combining colors from idea 1) and similar signs from large dictionary 2) may give something stronger than current captcha... But You know better so please consider this.

Title: Make captcha rules the spam » Some CAPTCHA variations/feature ideas

Hi konrad1811,

Thanks for posting your ideas.

Some remarks:

  • CAPTCHA maintenance/development is currently underpowered. At the moment I'm the only maintainer (looking for new people to help) and I already have my hands more than full with basic maintenance and bug fixing (Drupal development is not my day job). It is unlikely that I will be able to allocate time in the near and non-near future for implementing these ideas.
  • You said

.. to make captcha completely block spam

I'd like to note that CAPTCHA is not directly a tool to block spam, it is only a tool to (try to) block automated form submissions (which are typically used to post spam however). A human will still be able to post spam, and there is enough proof of spam organizations that put humans in the loop to solve CAPTCHA's and post spam. You will never be able to block this with a CAPTCHA system (unless you want to keep humans out too).

  • The overhead of CAPTCHA should be minimal for humans to minimize annoyance. You ideas seem to make the challenge harder, raising the bar for humans. Before doing this I would like proof that the current implementation is easy enough to crack by automated systems. I think the current image CAPTCHA module provides enough options and settings to tweak and change the properties/hackability of the image CAPTCHA.

That being said, note that the CAPTCHA module provides the necessary hooks for other modules to hook into, so your ideas could be implemented as a separate module, like there are several already, see the CAPTCHA project page

best,
soxofaan
