i would like to be able to bookmark a book and then see activity that happens in that book including new comments on any book page, any new book pages and new revisions / edits.

i put this as a feature request more to let people know it was going to be coming because i plan on doing this myself. However, i am looking for guidance on how you think i should accomplish this. so far, i can think of two options...

1). create a book bookmark and extended the existing logic to traverse up in a book to its highest level and see if a book bookmark exists then execute the normal code when an update occurs on a bookmarked item.

2). create a book bookmark the simple serves as an interface to un/bookmark something en mass ( and add new book marks when new book pages are added) then, again, let the normal functionality take over.

any one sound preferable over the other? which one would you choose or did you have a different approach?

Can you clarify what it is you are attempting to do? Are you attempting to add a Bookmark to a Book and all of it's subpages? Or just to the main Book page?

all of its sub pages and comments on sub pages.

consider...
Test Book
- Chapter 1
- Chapter 2
- chapter 3
- sub chapter 3a
- sub chapter 3b

i would like to be able to place a bookmark on "test book" and have all activity from subpages show up as activity on my bookmark.

I am uncertain what you mean by activity, however, I do not believe this is the right way to do this. Attempting to add a link to every item within a book and including all activity items as well would likely result in too much activity within the menu system and has the potential to overload the site.

If you are looking for ways to track changes, I would recommend using the rules module to notify you when content changes.

activity would be new comments, which bookmarks supports, and new book pages in a book, which bookmarks does not.

i have already evaluated the rules module and it won't work unless i use php in my rules and if im going to do that, i might as well write a module to do it.

This modules does not provide support for the notification of comments or other activities associated with node changes. Additionally, this module does not provide support for the automated addition of new content to a set of bookmarks.

For the automated addition of content links, http://drupal.org/project/menu_position or http://drupal.org/project/automenu might be better suited.

you clearly don't understand what i am trying to accomplish and that's fine. I will just code the fix and keep it for myself.
